How to Turn on 2FA for Steam

Please note: Specific instructions for enabling 2FA are subject to change without notice. Please check with each website or app for the most up-to-date information on this feature.

The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator is a feature of the Steam Mobile App that provides an additional level of security to your Steam account. The authenticator generates a code that you need to enter every time that you log on to your Steam account. The code changes every 30 seconds, can be used only once, and is unguessable. This system (2FA) is stronger than just your username and a password. It is recommeded that you add a phone number to your account, which makes recovering your account quite a bit easier. Your phone does not need to be connected to the Internet for the authenticator to work (however, your phone does need to know the correct time).

1. To enable the authenticator for your account, download the Steam Mobile App from your phone’s app store.

2. Open the Steam Mobile App and log in to your Steam account. Go to the Steam Guard menu (the top-most menu); here you can choose how to protect your account using various forms of Steam Guard.

3. Choose the option “Get Steam Guard codes from my phone.” You can choose to activate the Authenticator using your phone number (recommended) or by using your email account. Follow the directions in the sign up screens.

4. You should see a “Success” page, and a Steam Guard code at the top of your screen. You will receive email confirmations when you add the authenticator. (You will receive similar emails if the authenticator or phone is removed from your account, too.)

Whenever you need to log on to your account, from now on you’ll use the Steam Guard menu to see the current code to type in.
