Sitting inside TeleSign’s beautiful Marina del Rey headquarters, it’s easy to take food for granted. We have a fully-stocked kitchen for our team and access to world-class restaurants, just steps away. But the city that serves as a backdrop for our growth from a local start-up to a global force with offices around the world is also home to many people in need.
According to the latest statistics, 1 in 6 people in L.A. County experience hunger. For the past 40 years, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has been on a mission to mobilize resources to fight hunger in our community. To show our support for this effort, our LA team recently volunteered at the Food Bank.
The day began with a tour of the facility and stories from the staff about the many ways the Food Bank helps local citizens every day. Feeling inspired and ready for action, we were then broken into groups and trained on a variety of jobs we would be working on throughout the day. Whether it was inspecting canned food and bread products or organizing huge shipments of donations from major grocery stores and everyday people, no task was too small and we were quickly shown how powerful an impact our efforts could have in helping the community we love.
By working together as a team, we were able to sort through 30,597 pounds of food, which is the equivalent of 25,395 meals. This food is then distributed to shelters, soup kitchens, senior centers, food pantries and school programs across the city.
It was a rewarding experience for all of us who participated and one that we can’t wait to experience again. Our gratitude goes out to the hardworking staff and regular volunteers at the Food Bank for all that they do every day to fight hunger in the city we call our HQ.
