When a user attempted to access their account from a computer, and their browser or IP address which was not recognized, Salesforce would challenge them with a verification code sent to the email account on record.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The challenge<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>While innovative in 2007, Identity Confirmation by email suffered a variety of usability challenges as mobile computing took hold across enterprises.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Salesforce realized early on that mobility was becoming a major focus for businesses on a global scale. As part of this focus, Salesforce felt the need to move away from email based verification and authentication to a solution that not only enabled mobile computing, but leveraged a more secure infra-structure. This was a key driver in finding an alternative authentication solu-tion to email and offering SMS Identity Confirmation made perfect sense.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:image -->\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/assets-global.website-files.com\/622040cc7b9efcd66ccac2c3\/622040cc7b9efc431bcacfc4_Image2.jpg\" alt=\"Person typing at a laptop computer while on their phone with their other hand\"\/><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The solution<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>To meet these challenges, Salesforce replaced email two-factor authentication as its default feature for Identity Confirmation with authentication via SMS using Telesign.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>This brought numerous advantages. The mobile phone is the most universal personal device on the planet. By using this as a trust anchor, Salesforce was able to reach a broader user base, across the entire globe.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Salesforce uses a variety of methods to verify that a login source is authorized. Now, whenever a Salesforce user logs on to a computer, browser or IP address that\u2019s not recognized, their Identity Confirmation system triggers a one-time passcode (OTP) which is sent by SMS through Telesign to the user\u2019s mobile phone number on record.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:quote -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><!-- wp:paragraph {\"className\":\"py-8 text-telesign-violet-500 italic text-2xl font-light-\"} -->\n<p class=\"py-8 text-telesign-violet-500 italic text-2xl font-light-\">Identity Confirmation by SMS has been so effective it is now the default option for all Salesforce customers with verified mobile phone numbers.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:quote -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Users who do not have a mobile number on record are prompted to enter a mobile phone number upon login. (While email Identity Confirmation is still available, this is only an option for system administrators who wish to re-enable this function for users without mobile devices.) \u201cWe needed a partner that could scale to support our ever expanding global footprint. It was important that they provide these customers with strong access controls to avoid a breach of their account.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The challenge<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Citrix ShareFile was looking for a way to add an extra layer of online security with a robust solution that wouldn\u2019t require customers to remember yet another series of usernames and passwords. Looking for a globally reliable authentication provider that not only emphasizes security but also the nuances of an easy user experience can be a difficult process. Once users choose this option, they are required to enter a one-time PIN code, sent to their phone number, already on record, whenever they log in from a new device or unknown IP address. This represents an extra layer of protection, beyond a username and password, which effectively blocks fraudsters from gaining access to an account, even if a fraudster has obtained the login credentials. Once a fraudster attempts to log in, 2FA is activated, preventing any possibility of account compromise.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Unlike standard authentication procedures, the codes that SMS verification uses for 2FA login are unique and generated new every time. Were a breach to occur, and usernames and passwords stolen, ShareFile customers could still be certain their data was secure. Also, to allow for occasions when a customer might not have access to their primary phone number, Citrix ShareFile allows them to add a back-up number. There are many benefits to using virtual phone numbers, chief amongst them, it provides a low cost alternative to a traditional landline or cell phone. One of the earliest uses of virtual phone numbers was for affordable long-distance calling. Because of this, Skype virtual numbers were very popular.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>However, after some time Skype started to notice that their users were reporting lots of spam and robocalls. Nearly half of the volume of every inbound call a Skype customer received was fraudulent. In order to maintain a positive customer experience Skype needed a way to figure out which of these inbound calls were fraudulent and block them before they ever reached the end-user. Effectively identifying and blocking these harmful users at account registration, while streamlining the process for authentic and valuable users, has become critical.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The Skype and Telesign team wanted to look at the general Intelligence model and see if they could implement it as an \u2018inbound calling spam filter\u2019 included automatically with your Skype virtual number with the option to opt out. The Telesign team quickly deployed the solution for Skype and it was a massive success.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Skype sees roughly two million calls per day (or 100,000 calls per hour at peak.) Telesign is able to look at these phone numbers and help Skype block one million unwanted calls, or 50% of Skype\u2019s overall virtual phone number inbound traffic.
