Two-step verification (a.k.a. two-factor authentication, multi-factor authentication, or MFA) is a financial industry standard in which a user is required to provide additional verification after signing in. Often a confirmation code is provided to the user via text message or automated phone call. Any time you sign into an existing TurboTax account on an unrecognized computer or device, you will be asked to verify your identity first. For an additional layer of security, you can enable the verification feature each time you sign in with our two-step verification feature or the Google Authenticator App. This is called opt-in two-step verification. If you later opt out (deactivate) this feature, you will be asked to verify the first time you sign in on an unrecognized device.
1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
2. Click “MyAccount” in the upper right corner.
3. Click the “Account Settings” option.
4. Scroll down to Two-step Verification and click “Turn On.”
5. Enter your password and then click “Turn on two-step verification.”
Google Authenticator is another way to opt in to two-step authentication and add another layer of protection to your TurboTax account. Download the app on your iPhone or Android phone. Before you begin using Google Authenticator, ensure two-step verification has been enabled on your account.
6. Click the “Turn on Google Authenticator” button.
7. Select iPhone or Android as your phone type and click “Continue.”
8. Open the Google Authenticator app on your device. If you’re using the app for the first time, click “Begin Setup.” Otherwise, click the “+” at the top of the App window in iPhone or the “Menu” button to the left of Home on Android.
9. Choose either:
“Scan barcode” to scan the code on the screen, or
“Manual entry” to manually enter the account name (use “Inutit”) and the key provided on the screen (case-sensitive).
10. After you have successfully scanned the barcode or entered the key, you’ll receive a 6-digit Confirmation Code from TurboTax.
11. Enter the 6-digit Confirmation Code and then click “Verify and save.”
