Financial institutions have reported an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiverity.com\/resources\/new-report-reveals-20-billion-lost-to-synthetic-identity-fraud-sif-in-2020\">$20<\/a> billion in losses from synthetic ID fraud (an onboarding fraud type) in 2020, which is a 33% jump from just a few years prior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/whitepaper\/2023-state-of-fraud\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"299\" src=\"https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/new-account-fraud-6-1024x299.png\" alt=\"A person taking off a mask.\" class=\"wp-image-13770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/new-account-fraud-6-1024x299.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/new-account-fraud-6-300x88.png 300w, https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/new-account-fraud-6-768x224.png 768w, https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/new-account-fraud-6.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s look at the different types of new account fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"new-account-fraud-types-fake-users\"><\/span>New account fraud types: Fake users<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New account fraud is often carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/blog\/fake-users-create-havoc\">fake users<\/a>, who complete the onboarding process under the guise of false information in order to commit fraud and wreak havoc on digital platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fake user is an identity created by bad actors using stolen usernames, email addresses, and phone numbers. The resulting fake user is then able to pass through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/blog\/verification-authentication-differences\">verification and authentication<\/a> processes during onboarding and set up shop in the ecosystem, where they spam and victimize legitimate users, impersonate brands, and commit fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fake users are a serious issue, and it is believed they comprise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/20685\/duplicate-and-false-facebook-accounts\/\">16%<\/a> of Facebook accounts and roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/blog\/sparktoro-followerwonk-joint-twitter-analysis-19-42-of-active-accounts-are-fake-or-spam\/\">20%<\/a> of Twitter accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And speaking of Twitter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/blog\/twitter-spam-bots\">announced his intentions<\/a> to purchase the social media giant for $44 billion, only to back out due to his reported belief that Twitter has a spam bot issue it needs to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever the truth behind the mega deal drama turns out to be, fake users remain a source of concern for social media platforms, and bad actors continue to fine tune their tactics to stay one step ahead of security stacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"new-account-fraud-types-synthetic-id-fraud\"><\/span>New account fraud types: Synthetic ID fraud<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/fraud-prevention\/synthetic-identity-fraud\">Synthetic identity fraud<\/a> is, like fake users, a type of fraud that happens during account creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand synthetic ID fraud, it&#8217;s important to point out that it is different from traditional ID fraud, in which a bad actor pretends to be a real person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In synthetic ID fraud, bad actors combine both real and fake personal information to create a fake person, which they then use to apply for credit and make purchases in bad faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest problems resulting from synthetic ID is the identity created in these schemes doesn&#8217;t belong to a single, real person, and thus any fraudulent activity is untraceable and extremely costly to the victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"new-account-fraud-types-irsf\"><\/span>New account fraud types: IRSF<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesign.com\/blog\/irsf-fraud\">IRSF<\/a>, or International Revenue Share Fraud, is a communications fraud that gives bad actors a chance to benefit from revenue share from premium numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In IRSF, which occurs in the onboarding stage, fraudsters use scripted attacks and other illegal business practices to make unauthorized calls and messages to premium rate numbers (PRN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-irsf-works\"><\/span>How IRSF works<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The fraudster illegally acquires PRNs or number ranges to register on websites, triggering voice calls or SMS messages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fraudster uses automated scripts to cycle between numbers within their range. They test these scripts using trial transactions to check if a number is terminated or not, and then they ramp up traffic to those ranges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fraudster then colludes with international PRN providers and content providers to bring about artificial inflation of traffic from the acquired numbers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lastly, the fraudster moves on to another number and another destination to carry on the traffic for as long as the number ranges remain unblocked by the originating home operator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike other types of new account fraud, IRSF doesn&#8217;t target individuals; it targets businesses.
