As many of the recent mega breaches have shown, from Yahoo to Dropbox, LinkedIn and more, data breaches are rapidly becoming a part of our everyday lives. In fact, in the past year 40% of consumers experienced an online security incident, and a not-so-shocking 8 in 10 consumers are now worried about their online security (TeleSign's 2015 Consumer Account Security Report).
It's become clear that if consumers don't begin to take the right steps to secure themselves online, and soon, it's only a matter of time before everyone's personal information is leaked (if it hasn't been already). Recognizing the importance of this growing danger, The White House today has launched a new nationwide campaign called “Lock Down Your Login,” a campaign TeleSign is proud to be an official partner of alongside other industry leaders, aimed at raising awareness for the importance of online safety and empowering everyone to enable stronger authentication for their online accounts. The goal of the campaign is to ultimately encourage a move beyond usernames and passwords to a widespread adoption of strong authentication for key online accounts.
Here at TeleSign we know the password alone is no longer a sufficient security solution. Hackers can crack most passwords in seconds and poor password habits like reusing the same password across multiple accounts (something that is done for a whopping 73% of online accounts), leaves users vulnerable. Protecting accounts with two-factor authentication (aka multi-factor authentication or 2FA) significantly decreases the risk of a hacker accessing your online accounts, by combining your password (something you know) with a second factor, like your mobile phone (something you have). With 2FA turned on for your banking, shopping, social media or other accounts, even if a hacker steals your password they can't break into your account.
The White House campaign also coincides with October's 13th annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. During this month, TeleSign, the White House, National Cyber Security Alliance, and other industry leaders will be promoting the campaign across the country and helping consumers better understand the importance of online security by conducting a series of Twitter chats once a week, every Thursday at 12pm PT.
