Give Dad the Gift of 2FA

He taught you to ride a bike, drive a car, shave, tie a tie and most likely bought you your first computer. Now it's your turn to give Dad a valuable lesson in life; it's time to have the talk about two-factor authentication.

Father's Day is just a few days away but it's not too late to deliver the gift that keeps giving. If Dad loves social media, manages his investments and finances online, lives in his email and/or enjoys the freedom and convenience of e-commerce, take some time this Sunday to help him turn on 2FA to prevent his accounts from being compromised.

Research shows that only 22 percent of Baby Boomers and 15 percent of those 70 and older are confident that their passwords will protect their online accounts. Since 2FA adds a second layer of protection, beyond just the password, your Father's Day gift/tip will surely impress.Follow these easy steps to be the apple of his eye.

  • Explain what 2FA is. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an additional layer of protection beyond your password.  It significantly decreases the risk of a hacker accessing your banking, shopping, social media or other online accounts by combining your password (something you know) with a second factor, like your mobile phone (something you have).
  • Explain why he needs it. Those 50 and older use an average of seven passwords to protect their online accounts...but all of them are easy to steal or hack. In fact, in the past year, 40 percent of consumers experienced a security incident (received a notice that their personal information had been compromised, had an account hacked or had a password stolen).
  • Show him how it works. Even if your dad isn't the most tech savvy guy around, he can quickly get up to speed on how 2FA works by watch this handy video:
  • Show him where he should turn it on. Ask Dad to give you a rundown on all his accounts. Once you have a good list, start with the most high priority--perhaps banking--and then find out if those sites offer 2FA by checking this list:
  • Help him turn it on for his accounts. Walk him through the first few sites on his list by following each tutorial together and turning on 2FA.

Happy Father's Day!"
