Two-Factor Authentication

If you've started researching different options for securing your site using two-factor authentication, you've probably found that most solutions are expensive, difficult to implement, and time-consuming to manage.

Here's how it works:

1. When a user registers (or updates his contact information) on your site, prompt him to enter his regularly-used telephone numbers (home, mobile, work, etc.), along with any other information you wish to collect from him.
2. The next time the user logs into your site, prompt him for his username and password.
3. If the username and password he enters are correct, display the phone numbers he entered during registration on the screen. Allow the user to select a phone number where he can be reached immediately.
4. Use TeleSign to send a voice call (or SMS message¹) to the phone number selected by the user containing a temporary PIN number.
5. Prompt the user to enter this PIN number into your website.
6. If the PIN number entered is correct, allow the user to access his account.

The example above can be used for any type of login: email, financial institutions, corporate extranets, etc. Plus, because integration is accomplished using a SOAP-based API, you can decide when and how to use TeleSign's Two-Factor Authentication solution. You may want to require verification on every login, or you may only want to verify users when they're attempting to login from an unrecognized computer.
