On May 17, 2011, TeleSign announced that the U.S. Patent Office awarded Patent No. 7,945,034 for TeleSign’s PhoneID, a technology that enables companies to identify risky transactions by analyzing and reporting a set of key attributes associated with a phone number.
PhoneID identifies the user’s phone type, providing merchants with accurate data to assess high risk transactions or to simply determine who can receive an SMS. PhoneID enables businesses to:

PhoneID identifies several attributes from a user’s phone number:
- Phone type, such as: Mobile, Landline, Non-fixed VoIP, Invalid, Pre-Paid, Personal, Pager, Toll-Free and Restricted.
- Geographic information, such as: City, County, State, Country, Latitude, Longitude and Time Zone.
- Telecom carrier information: AT&T Wireless, Boost Mobile, O2, etc.

How it Works
PhoneID is provided through a simple to integrate REST API and can be used as a stand-alone product for fraud detection and protection or in conjunction with TeleSign Verify. Once an end user provides their phone number as part of the check out process or when filling out a form, TeleSign automatically returns the characteristics of the phone number without interruption to the user. Companies can then act on this information and assess the quality of the transaction or lead.
PhoneID includes phone number cleansing, which leverages TeleSign’s relationships with Telcos and internal heuristics to automatically correct improperly formatted phone numbers.

How can PhoneID Standard save money and prevent undeliverable messages?
Not everyone is equipped with SMS capabilities and there is a large portion of the population who are more comfortable with voice calls. Additionally SMS is a less reliable delivery mechanism than voice. PhoneID recently showed that 17.8% of all SMS were being sent to landlines from a company using a competing solution. This resulted in an additional cost and unhappy customers who are still waiting for their authentication codes.
Is PhoneID Standard a stand-alone product?

Does PhoneID Standard replace manual review?
The manual review process depends on each client’s preference. PhoneID provides an additional data point for clients to assess the risk of each transaction based on what phone is provided. The client can decide to bypass manual review in low-risk phone numbers such as landlines and mobiles, and automatically request manual review for high-risk phone numbers such as non-fixed VoIP and pre-paid mobiles. TeleSign provides business intelligence for the client to make informed decisions without requiring the end customer to take an extra step.
