Recent comments by top Defense Department official, Robert Lentz, regarding anonymity on the internet highlight the importance of phone verification solutions.

Lentz spoke at Black Hat USA, a digital defense convention in Las Vegas, and stated that “there needs to be a cyberczar just for identity” and that we must “drive anonymity out of the Net as much as possible.” Both of his statements reveal the importance of securing the internet for businesses as well as consumers. Online Identity has been at the forefront of Internet Security discussions as the amount of online identity fraud as steadily increased. The amount of identity fraud that occurs online is largely related to the ability for fraudsters to remain anonymous online and do damage without providing traceable evidence linking them to cases of identity fraud. In response to the ability to stay anonymous on the internet, many companies have developed anti-fraud solutions that help remove this anonymity by requiring a piece of traceable evidence whenever a transaction, registration, etc. is processed.

TeleSign’s uses the telephone as an anti-fraud measure by verifying users/transactions via telephone. TeleSign sends an outgoing SMS or Voice Call to a user’s phone with a three digit PIN that the end-user then enters into the website to verify their identity. In addition to stopping bots that spam websites and commit fraud, TeleSign’s Phone Verification makes the end-user provide a traceable phone number which can be traced later if fraud is suspected.
