A recent article in FoxNews’ Cyber Security Section highlights the need for companies to screen customers using Phone Verification.

The article, “Alleged VoIP Scam Highlight Looming Security Threat” discusses how two individuals were able to sell “discount voice-over-IP services delivered secretly over other companies’ networks.” This scam, in addition to several other security issues regarding VoIP numbers has made it essential for phone verification companies to screen the phone numbers entered into their phone verification system to ensure that the phone number is not a VoIP number which are often used by fraudsters. The easy access to VoIP numbers makes them extremely useful for scammers and fraudsters who have started to use them in attempts to defraud phone verification companies.

TeleSign’s Phone Verification can be set up so that the website administrator can require phone verification and not allow VoIP numbers as acceptable phone numbers for phone verification. TeleSign’s phone verification can be implemented seamlessly into a website, and when an individual tries to get phone verified using a VoIP number, they will not be able to. This is essential to ensuring the person who is being phone verified really is a legitimate user and not a fraudster who has stolen several VoIP numbers that are not traceable like a mobile phone or land line. Being able to weed out VoIP numbers from going through our phone verification process will truly improve a website’s fraud prevention abilities.
